During the next decades the World will assist to unprecedented and vast economic growth, unique in human history.
In 2050 our World will be in the midst of one its largest, fastest and most radical transformation that human beings have ever already witnessed. Our societies, economies and all our industries will be affected, including the Chemical Industry. New economic superpowers, like the BRIC or the Next 11 will emerge; new industries and new and large economic players will appear, while many others will quickly loss relevance. The speed of change will be fast, while the need for change will be unquestionable.
In a World of 9 billion people, with a global GDP higher than $ 400 Trillion, the Chemical Industry, with an expected potential size of $17 trillion will have an historical and unique opportunity to unleash its full potential and make clear and visible its contribution to human progress and development.
The technological supremacy of the Chemical Industry will position itself into the leading position to solve some of the major global challenges, human beings have even seen. Addressing climate change, aging populations, resource scarcity, globality, networks speed, pandemics and massive growth and demand in all short of raw materials and goods would be, among many others, some of the major challenges for this Society and the Chemical Industry.
This massive economic growth will also carry with it levels of wealth unknown in our human history, especially for the poorest areas of the world. That will carry significant opportunities for our world, but that will not come along.
In November 2001, Goldman Sachs stated "The World needs better BRIC Economics" in 2007 United Nations and former US Vice President Mr. Al Gore sated the "World also needs better Climate Change Economics", this paper firmly believes by 2050 what our "World will really need is a better Chemistry". Lets explore together what challenges and opportunities lie in front of the Chemical Industry by 2050.
Take a deep breath and enjoy the trip to the future and lets start with this short video on the World in 2050 from Goldman Sachs
